What is ATEX?
ATEX derives its name from the French ATmosphères EXplosibles and refers to two European Union directives governing equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The primary directive relevant to fan manufacturers and users is Directive 2014/34/EU (commonly called the "ATEX Equipment Directive"), which sets the essential health and safety requirements for equipment placed on the market for use in hazardous areas.
In environments where flammable gases, vapours, mists, or combustible dusts may be present, any electrical or mechanical equipment — including ventilation fans — can potentially become an ignition source. ATEX certification ensures that fans are designed, manufactured, and tested to eliminate ignition risks through spark-resistant materials, controlled surface temperatures, and specialised motor protection.
Hazardous Zone Classification
The foundation of ATEX compliance is the classification of hazardous areas into zones based on the frequency and duration of explosive atmosphere presence. Zone classification determines the level of protection required for any equipment installed in that area.

Equipment Groups and Categories
ATEX classifies equipment into two main groups:
- Group I: Equipment for use in underground mines susceptible to firedamp (methane) and/or combustible dust.
- Group II: Equipment for use in all other places with potentially explosive atmospheres (surface industries). This is the group relevant to most industrial fan applications.
Within Group II, equipment is further divided into three gas subgroups based on the ignition energy of the gas present:
- IIA: Propane and similar gases (most common)
- IIB: Ethylene and similar gases (moderate hazard)
- IIC: Hydrogen and acetylene (highest hazard)
Understanding ATEX Marking
Every ATEX-certified product carries a standardised marking that encodes its protection level. For example:
Ex II 2G IIB T4
- Ex — Equipment complies with one or more explosion protection standards
- II — Equipment Group II (surface industries, not mining)
- 2 — Category 2 (suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 2)
- G — For Gas/vapour atmospheres (D would indicate Dust)
- IIB — Gas subgroup IIB (suitable for ethylene-type gases and below)
- T4 — Temperature class T4 (maximum surface temperature 135°C)

- Spark-resistant construction: Impellers manufactured from aluminium alloy with adequate clearances to steel housings, or fully aluminium (non-ferrous) construction to prevent friction sparks.
- Flameproof motors (Ex d): Motors enclosed in flameproof housings that contain any internal explosion and prevent it from propagating to the surrounding atmosphere.
- Increased safety motors (Ex e): Motors with enhanced design features that prevent sparks, arcs, or dangerous temperatures during normal operation.
- Anti-static coatings: Surface treatments and materials that prevent static charge accumulation on fan components.
- Sealed bearings: Bearings with temperature monitoring provisions and sealed grease lubrication to prevent overheating.
Each ATEX fan ships with a complete documentation package including the EU Declaration of Conformity, reference to the Technical Construction File (TCF), installation instructions specific to hazardous area use, and the characteristic ATEX nameplate with full Ex marking.
